CASTELLAR: Innovative Magnetic Storage for Tailoring Tools

An Orderly and Convenient Solution for Tailor Ladies

The tailor ladies hold a significant place in Taiwan's history and collective memory. To enhance their working environment and improve efficiency and professionalism, designer Fang Shih introduces CASTELLAR, a unique magnetic storage system for tailoring tools.

CASTELLAR is a set of magnetic storage containers designed to be placed on the sewing machine, providing a clean and organized workspace for tailor ladies. This innovative solution not only enhances efficiency but also elevates their professional image.

One of the key features of CASTELLAR is its ability to store different tailoring tools effectively. The bridge part of the storage system is designed to hold shuttles, reducing the desk's cluttered space. Tailor ladies can conveniently store a group of shuttles needed for a particular task. Additionally, the box part of CASTELLAR utilizes magnetic force to securely hold needles. The downward concave cone prevents users' hands from being accidentally stabbed when retrieving the needles. Furthermore, the four surfaces of the box allow for easy classification of different types of needles.

The inspiration for CASTELLAR came from observing tailor ladies' habits of placing objects on the sewing machine and using magnets to attach notes. Taking advantage of the fact that most tailoring tools are made of stainless steel, Fang Shih decided to utilize the space above the machine and incorporate magnetic elements for efficient storage.

The design of CASTELLAR was realized using plastic injection molding, ensuring durability and ease of production. The dimensions of the storage system are 180mm x 90mm x 100mm, providing ample space for various tailoring tools.

During the design process, Fang Shih conducted extensive research on the traditional tailor profession in Taiwan. The goal was to create an orderly and convenient working environment that would improve efficiency and enhance the professional image of tailor ladies. The project took place in Taiwan from September 2017 to January 2018.

CASTELLAR has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Art and Stationery Supplies Design category in 2020. This prestigious award acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. CASTELLAR's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

With CASTELLAR, tailor ladies can now enjoy a clean and organized workspace, enhancing their efficiency and professional image. This innovative magnetic storage solution is a testament to the power of design in improving everyday experiences.
